Tricor (Fenofibrate)
General information
Tricor is used to treat high cholesterol and high triglyceride levels. It belongs to a group of drugs known as fibrates. It works by increasing the natural substance (enzyme) that breaks down fats in the blood. Lowering 'bad' cholesterol and triglycerides and raising 'good' cholesterol decreases the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks. Lowering triglycerides in people with very high triglyceride blood levels may also decrease the risk of pancreas disease (pancreatitis).
Directions
Take Tricor exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication by mouth, usually once daily. Take each dose with a full glass of water. It may be taken with or without food. If you also take certain other drugs to lower your cholesterol, take Tricor at least 1 hour before or at least 4-6 hours after taking these medications. It is important to continue taking this medication even if you feel well.
Precautions
Before taking Tricor you should talk with your doctor if you have diabetes, gallbladder disease or gallstones, heart disease, kidney disease, kidney failure, liver disease, liver failure, thyroid gland problems (hypothyroidism), any allergy. Avoid alcoholic beverages. Alcohol can raise triglyceride levels, and may also damage your liver.
Contraindications
You should not take Tricor if you are allergic to it, fenofibrate, or any of the inactive components of the drug, or if you have severe liver disease or abnormally high liver enzymes, severe kidney disease, pre-existing gallbladder disease or gallstones. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have severe stomach or abdominal pain, persistent nausea, vomiting, yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine, muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, easy bleeding, fever, sore throat, unusual tiredness, chest pain, swelling of arms or legs, rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue, throat, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.

Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: cholesterol-lowering medicines (fluvastatin, cerivastatin, simvastatin, lovastatin), cyclosporine, blood thinners (warfarin), bile acid sequestrants (colestipol, colesevelam, cholestyramine). Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
The overdose symptoms are unknown. If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once.
